This sweet girl graduated from Heelan High School one year after me. We knew each other simply, but became more acquainted with each other on our choir tour (my senior year, her junior year) when we flew to NYC to sing at Carnegie Hall. It has been 10 years since we’ve talked or had any contact, until she emailed me a few months ago inquiring about the FLASH COURSE! She has been wanting to start a business and take her hobby of photography to a new and productive level. The timing was perfect for both of us. She lives in Cedar Rapids, IA and I was going to be on my 2nd round of Sioux City sessions at the beginning of August! So, my trip was kicked off with a FLASH! Leah was a sponge and a great model in her mini-session… THEN, had the opportunity to shoot one of my booked seniors, Katie, for her Flash Course model!

Aren’t her eyes the prettiest, icy green you’ve ever seen??

Leah was totally on her game… and so was our senior model, Katie Bergdale, a North High senior. They have tons of land around their property on the north end of town, so we took full advantage of the property.

It’s always important for photographers to be visible on your website.. let people know WHO will be taking the photos.. The first thing I think of when I see an amazing photo, I think… “who took that??” I follow the links (hopefully) to the provided website and go straight to the “ABOUT ME” section.  This photo was a lesson in lighting. Marissa and I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich at Chloe’s Corner at Kierland and discussed how lighting can make or break your subject and photo, thus placing your subject in the best possible light in the cafe! While we were shooting her mini session, we were referring to the FLASH COURSE workbook! So, she modeled it like a pro! You are awesome, Marissa! I can’t wait to see what you do!!

I appreciate these two for more than just modeling for us, they have become amazingly genuine friends of Chance and I. She is the youngest of my Flash Coursers so far, but has raging potential! She is starting college in the fall at ASU as a graphic design major and will now have photography as a skill to make her way through college and constantly satisfy that left-brain itch. She is seen here (cute as a button) photographing the beautiful friends of the Pearson’s…. the Devan and Kristen Grell! I love this opposing perspective here… and  my Land Rover gets some love too–along with the nose of Kristen’s Acura! Here is the logo and business card we designed for Marissa.. a good start, at least! This is her new letterhead as well! Marissa Jo— I am SO PROUD of what you have accomplished and so impressed with how much of a little sponge you are! I am thrilled to watch you grow!

We had a BLAST together for the past few days. We played and worked from 9am-9pm on Monday and 9am-12pm on Tuesday! She is experienced with her camera and just wanted some one-on-one attention towards business organization and the tools to re-launch her business successfully in San Diego! She currently lives here in Arizona as a hair stylist and makeup artist and has always loved photography on the side. With this move to San Diego next week, she is ready to launch into full-time photography. I am SO proud of her and the work we accomplished together. She walked away this afternoon with a mini-photo session of herself that we shot yesterday, a new logo, new letterhead, a gift basket (of course) and these new portfolio pieces seen below!

You may be sick of these faces, BUT I’M NOT!!!!! I absolutely LOVE using Ashley and Nathan as bridal models! These are the images I shot in Jennie’s mini-session. We actually stopped at AJs to get this purple bouquet of flowers for ASHLEY.. but we set them down and forgot about them! At least we got a shot of Jennie with them. $8. One shot. Oh well. It was worth it. Is she gorgeous or what?? Her eyes are all natural… no retouching or enhancing on these! How do all the pretty girls find me?  I saw these windows on this building and they were so teal-y in appearance and I knew they would be something that would bring her eyes out.  Jennifer!!! I am SO excited that we were able to spend this time together before you moved… but I’m now sad you are actually moving! Another flash course led into a lifetime friendship.. I’m looking forward to watching you grow!

She originally emailed me to see how and where she could be involved with my PEARLS MINISTRY! I was grateful for her offer and we’ve become great friends. We are now in a weekly Bible study together (along with Ashley, the bride model seen in these photos.. and 7 other girls!) I am so proud of Stacey and the launch of her photography business, STACEY POTERSON PHOTOGRAPHY!

Subconsciously, you create in your own mind what you think they may look like. Needless to say, Randi and I exchanged many emails while we were booking and planning her Flash Course and talked several times on the phone. So… I had a vision. It was not this. I can’t tell you what I was thinking… nothing REALLY specific… just not THIS. So, there I was, pulling up to the airport curb looking for a girl that matched the voice I heard on the phone.. in a red jacket—That’s all I knew. Soooo, uuuuhh….. she failed to tell me she was a supermodel.

Ok, not actually a supermodel, but definitely fooled me. She was seemingly quite nervous being in FRONT of the camera rather than behind it, but it was a good lesson in taking direction, giving direction and feeling the awkwardness someone feels when there’s a camera RIGHT in your face. Buuut… I would say she did incredibly well, huh??

We were instant friends as soon as she loaded her luggage into my car. Right away, we had more to talk about than just photography. At the end of our time together we had felt like it had been a week (in a good way) with all the things we had accomplished… and also felt like we had known each other our entire lives. This is a start of a great friendship ahead!

Here (in my favorite room, the fireplace room) we took a few warm up shots inside and I love how relaxed and casual she looks.

This is such an angelic pose/light source/face etc. I just LOVE it!!!
F is for FIERCE.  A lesson in shooting in open sunlight and exposing for the sky… LOVE the simplicity here. Just a simple pose, pretty girl, off set in front of the Salvation Army building in downtown Tempe. Randi—–THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking a risk on this trip. Your amazing effort and passion will pay off and I am SO proud of you and the work that you’ve accomplished! Keep up the amazing work!!!

It was a PACKED workshop with 3 mini sessions, her session, computer fun and lots… and I mean lots of candy. In fact, we ran so ragged and fast that our lunch on Tuesday was Milk Duds and Gobstoppers. I promise, I offered to feed her at any moment possible, but we were still full from breakfast and just feeling a few handfuls of candy… my teeth are on their way out, for sure.

So, here are a few shots I snagged of Randi shooting my sweet friend, Amy, our model. Amy is always up for a shoot and Randi was thrilled to shoot such a great subject.
I stepped in to grab this shot of Amy—I just couldn’t sit back and watch! Amy is amazing at every angle! One of the MOST important aspects to shooting models is talking to them, demonstrate poses, get involved and put yourself in their shoes. Feeling confident direction your subjects will get you the shots you want and exactly what you are envisioning. Models, families, seniors… whoever it is that you’re shooting cannot read you mind, so it’s up to us to tell them what we’re dreaming up in our heads. We are more than just photographers. We are set designers, lighting/ambient lighting directors, posing coordinators, enthusiastic cheerleaders, clowns and camera technicians. All wrapped up in one person. A good photographer will exude all of those characteristics… especially the camera technician part.
I LOVE this shot. We chose this location so I could teach Randi about exposing correctly for shooting both into the sun and with minor obstructions to the sun. You can tell in the next few shots, we took shots at her from every angle without really rotating her body for the sake of training. We had such a blast….and several onlookers with cell phone camera drive by snaps :)
