She is a self-proclaimed “super beginner” so we talked over the very basics of camera function (according to what she was shooting with), lighting and posing for the first half of the day, then we were able to use this gorgeous model (my sweet friend, Chaz) so we could put Kristin’s new skills to practice. Check out the images she snapped!! Here are a few shots of Kristin from her mini session within the Flash Course! And I couldn’t resist snapping a few of my own shots of Chaz. She is just too pretty for this camera to pass up! I love the light and the high level of grain in this image! Thank you, sweet Chaz, for modeling and GREAT JOB Kristin! You really captured Chaz’s beauty and that is what makes successful photography! I am so proud of you!

Here are the lovely results of Kayce’s Mini Session within her Flash Course. These photos are intended for several purposes… 1) the obvious.. USE THEM ON YOUR WEBSITE!!! The FIRST place I go on a photographer’s site is the “About Me” section. I want to know who the Oz is behind the curtain… and prospective clients want to know who they may be working with! If I saw Kayce on her website and loved her products.. I would hire her in a heartbeat! The 2nd, and not so obvious reason, is so Kayce knows what her clients feel like in FRONT of the camera. Being behind it almost ALWAYS, we forget how uncomfortable it can be to have a camera pointed at you. Learning how to talk your clients into the point of comfortability in front of the camera is KEY in getting great shots!

Thank you to my eye-candy cousin, Matt and Brie, one of my lovely assistants! She is the graphic designer mastermind behind all of my albums. She started as an intern last March when we met and it’s been heavenly having her around ever since! This portrait session was focused on portraits for a male and female. Brie could also pass as a high school senior model (at 19 years old) but Matt… eh… he’s a working professional, so maybe we’ll just call him a model. In Jamie’s Flash Course session, we focused a lot on lighting, posing and different angles of the face. It’s important to try several angles on your subjects… some will photograph better than others. If you are Matt or Brie, you really have no wrong side. Good for you guys. And thank you, Brie, for being so willing to put my clothes on!! (Matt too, for that matter)

Jamie did a GREAT job absorbing all the information from the Flash Course!! I was also SO pleased that she chose to use my handwriting for her logo. As we were taking copious notes over our lunch at The Cheesecake Factory, I wrote down J. Ashton. The next day she said… “Pull out that notebook you were taking notes on yesterday…” and she pointed to her name.. “That’s what I want!” She said it with such certainty and I was thrilled! So, it is officially her logo!

Great Job, Jamie!! I’m so proud of you!!!

We laughed (and even cried) over sushi as we talked a mix of life and business. In order to get to business, you must talk about life. I absolutely adore Rachel and genuinely enjoyed every moment with her. She is a quiet and dedicated spirit and will do a fabulous job in this industry! Here is her work!!!

Whenever I give direction to a couple, I offer to play the “girl” as I am. However, I will always use the girl to drape myself on as if SHE were the guy. For obvious and appropriate reasons, boundaries within a photo session are top priority. Girl photogs: always use the girls to demonstrate poses… NOT their husbands or boyfriends. Would you want some other girl all close and cuddly on your dude? I wouldn’t. Stand back, ladies… I know Chance is hot, but he’s MINE!!! lol

This sweet girl graduated from Heelan High School one year after me. We knew each other simply, but became more acquainted with each other on our choir tour (my senior year, her junior year) when we flew to NYC to sing at Carnegie Hall. It has been 10 years since we’ve talked or had any contact, until she emailed me a few months ago inquiring about the FLASH COURSE! She has been wanting to start a business and take her hobby of photography to a new and productive level. The timing was perfect for both of us. She lives in Cedar Rapids, IA and I was going to be on my 2nd round of Sioux City sessions at the beginning of August! So, my trip was kicked off with a FLASH! Leah was a sponge and a great model in her mini-session… THEN, had the opportunity to shoot one of my booked seniors, Katie, for her Flash Course model!

Aren’t her eyes the prettiest, icy green you’ve ever seen??

Leah was totally on her game… and so was our senior model, Katie Bergdale, a North High senior. They have tons of land around their property on the north end of town, so we took full advantage of the property.

It’s always important for photographers to be visible on your website.. let people know WHO will be taking the photos.. The first thing I think of when I see an amazing photo, I think… “who took that??” I follow the links (hopefully) to the provided website and go straight to the “ABOUT ME” section.  This photo was a lesson in lighting. Marissa and I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich at Chloe’s Corner at Kierland and discussed how lighting can make or break your subject and photo, thus placing your subject in the best possible light in the cafe! While we were shooting her mini session, we were referring to the FLASH COURSE workbook! So, she modeled it like a pro! You are awesome, Marissa! I can’t wait to see what you do!!

She is the youngest of my Flash Coursers so far, but has raging potential! She is starting college in the fall at ASU as a graphic design major and will now have photography as a skill to make her way through college and constantly satisfy that left-brain itch. She is seen here (cute as a button) photographing the beautiful friends of the Pearson’s…. the Devan and Kristen Grell! I love this opposing perspective here… and  my Land Rover gets some love too–along with the nose of Kristen’s Acura! Here is the logo and business card we designed for Marissa.. a good start, at least! This is her new letterhead as well! Marissa Jo— I am SO PROUD of what you have accomplished and so impressed with how much of a little sponge you are! I am thrilled to watch you grow!
