This sweet girl graduated from Heelan High School one year after me. We knew each other simply, but became more acquainted with each other on our choir tour (my senior year, her junior year) when we flew to NYC to sing at Carnegie Hall. It has been 10 years since we’ve talked or had any contact, until she emailed me a few months ago inquiring about the FLASH COURSE! She has been wanting to start a business and take her hobby of photography to a new and productive level. The timing was perfect for both of us. She lives in Cedar Rapids, IA and I was going to be on my 2nd round of Sioux City sessions at the beginning of August! So, my trip was kicked off with a FLASH! Leah was a sponge and a great model in her mini-session… THEN, had the opportunity to shoot one of my booked seniors, Katie, for her Flash Course model!

Aren’t her eyes the prettiest, icy green you’ve ever seen??

Leah was totally on her game… and so was our senior model, Katie Bergdale, a North High senior. They have tons of land around their property on the north end of town, so we took full advantage of the property.

Our friendship started almost 2 years ago when she emailed me (as a faithful blog follower) to ask my advice for wedding makeup. We exchanges a few emails and it was then that I discovered her first artistic trade, Silver Spoon Studios, a custom graphic design concept. As I searched Silver Spoon Studios, my eye caught another site connected to that one that she also launched called SpirituallyShe. Of course, anything Christian-ish catches my eye and I find myself on THAT site and LOVE it too! Months passed and we finally scheduled a lunch date where we discussed photography, and BAM… look at her now. I believe this is her fifth site, not to mention her professional modeling career… geez girl. Why can’t you be an average achiever like the rest of us. Katie is the sweetest, most lovable young girl!! Her mom contacted me several months ago to set up a photo session for her daughter. It was going to take some planning because they were flying all the way from Toronto, Canada for this session! I was immediately nervous… coming all the way from Canada, I better deliver, eh? So, Katie, an 11 year old philanthropist, twin, animal lover and actress just blew me away with her personality and charm. So much so that when we wrapped up our lunch together after the session I got a little teary. I was so moved that Katie and her parents would fly all the way here just head shots and turn around the next day and go back to Toronto. While enjoying our post session lunch at (Katie’s choice) Olive Garden, I thought to finally ask.. how did you even find me? Well, you know Canadians and their love for all things Wayne Gretzky-ish, they were googling their curiosity away about Wayne’s family of 7. As they started to search around, they stumbled upon MY images of the Gretzky kids and was lead to my website. Anyway, it was friendship forever at first site as I greeted them out in my driveway with Marli on her leash, so excited. Katie brought me a beautifully bundled bouquet of bright colored flowers (my favorite) and box of chocolates (another favorite) and a stuffed plush dog with a noisemaker inside…. (Marli’s favorite). Within 2 minutes of them being in our house, Marli snagged the stuffed dog and ate it. It was a wonderful session and I will be friends with Katie for life! Look at those green eyes!!

Subconsciously, you create in your own mind what you think they may look like. Needless to say, Randi and I exchanged many emails while we were booking and planning her Flash Course and talked several times on the phone. So… I had a vision. It was not this. I can’t tell you what I was thinking… nothing REALLY specific… just not THIS. So, there I was, pulling up to the airport curb looking for a girl that matched the voice I heard on the phone.. in a red jacket—That’s all I knew. Soooo, uuuuhh….. she failed to tell me she was a supermodel.

Ok, not actually a supermodel, but definitely fooled me. She was seemingly quite nervous being in FRONT of the camera rather than behind it, but it was a good lesson in taking direction, giving direction and feeling the awkwardness someone feels when there’s a camera RIGHT in your face. Buuut… I would say she did incredibly well, huh??

We were instant friends as soon as she loaded her luggage into my car. Right away, we had more to talk about than just photography. At the end of our time together we had felt like it had been a week (in a good way) with all the things we had accomplished… and also felt like we had known each other our entire lives. This is a start of a great friendship ahead!

Here (in my favorite room, the fireplace room) we took a few warm up shots inside and I love how relaxed and casual she looks.

This is such an angelic pose/light source/face etc. I just LOVE it!!!
F is for FIERCE.  A lesson in shooting in open sunlight and exposing for the sky… LOVE the simplicity here. Just a simple pose, pretty girl, off set in front of the Salvation Army building in downtown Tempe. Randi—–THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking a risk on this trip. Your amazing effort and passion will pay off and I am SO proud of you and the work that you’ve accomplished! Keep up the amazing work!!!
