My first mom confession:

For all of you that were expecting me to take a minimum of 1,000 photos a day of my child will be sourly disappointed in me. Here is the confession.. I didn’t really start taking pictures of her until she about 3 weeks old. The sad excuse is that I was just too tired.. and when she would actually fall asleep, ain’t nobody gonna touch the child. Let her sleep and do not even breathe on her! She was a touchy newborn. High maintenance. Awake. Fussy. Awake. Diva. Loud. Awake. Crying. Did I mention high maintenance? Ok, she’s still a newborn, but this little angel turned a corner around 3 weeks. She turned 3 weeks on Christmas Day.. it was one of the hardest days we had yet. I cried right along with her every time she cried. I was awake when she was awake and awake when she was asleep. I couldn’t be the party pooper on Christmas and escape to my bedroom for some much needed rest… not on CHRISTMAS! (Besides, by the time she would fall asleep and I thought I could let out a big sigh of relief, she would wake and the cycle continued). It was a rough day. Then, the best Christmas gift of all.. she slept 7 straight hours through the night. 7 HOURS of uninterrupted, deep, blissful sleep. It was like crack–though I’ve never smoked crack, so I’m not really sure that’s a legit comparison. Anyway, I was a new person. From then on, I have started to feel well and stable enough to finally pick up my camera and start snapping. My sweet mom was the one taking all the photos of her for the first 3 weeks. Between our 2 iPhone photo galleries, there must be hundreds upon hundreds. I have since rekindled my love with my Canon. We are doing MUCH better around here. (Chance will tell you… it was pretty ugly for a minute).

Here is my happy girl just after waking from a nap. And some of my favorite photos of my life. My sweet and talented assistant, Amy Cooper snapped a few shots (impromptu at our friend, Jenn’s house one afternoon). Sometimes the best photos are when you least expect it… OR when you’re just REALLY in love with the theme of the subject–my deep, ridiculous love for my daughter. It’s fun to be on the other side of receiving photos… I can’t stop thanking Amy for this GIFT!! It’s so fun to be on this side of the camera in precious times of life like these.

As any portrait photographer would know, with children, sometimes it takes less than 5 minutes to snap a few great shots and sometimes it can take an hour before you feel like you get a small handful of “satisfactory” or “recoverable” shots. It depends on a lot of factors.. setting, lighting, equipment, of course.. but most of all, the child. As a brand new mom, I am seeing moms with kids so differently. My sweet friend, Aubrey has put in so much hard work training up this little guy. He’s going to be 2 in just 2 months and he is the FURTHEST thing from terrible. He’s a precious little man with a sweet smile and even sweeter spirit. Aubrey was one of the first friends I made when I moved to Arizona 6 years ago. We met at church and it went a little something like this.

Aubrey: hi. I like your hair.

Kacey: thanks. do you wanna be friends?

And we lived happily ever after as roommates for a year and friends for life. She has been a tremendous help and encouragement to me in my first few weeks of mamahood.

I had a brief (sleeping Sway baby) moment to upload a few shots from the hospital of the most life changing last few days. In a nutshell, labor and delivery were amazing and successful.

Official Maternity Leave Notice…

Hi!

I am happy to announce that I will be on official maternity leave until the beginning of March! I have started booking for the Spring, so don’t hesitate to email with booking inquiries… BUT, you won’t get me, you’ll get Amy, my amazing assistant. She will take care of you from there!

If you are interested in a family photo session between now and March and would like to book a session with my amazing assistant, Amy, she is available and booking sessions. For all other weddings, high school seniors and other portrait sessions that would like to book with me will resume in March.

Swayze’s Nursery: Unveiled and ready for her arrival!

This has been the anticipated project of the year in my household. Sure, I may have hyped it up a bit in my head, over-thought the color scheme, design and execution to the point of my mom’s insanity, but the end result is finally here and exactly what my unsettled and ever-changing mind could ever hope for. I am SO excited that Sway’s room is ready for her to move in. MY MOM…. Oh, how I cannot emphasize that enough… my mom is a miracle worker. Her patience with me is one thing, but she deserves SO much credit for this room coming together the way that it did. She calmed me, reeled me, inspired me and executed the things I could not. Here is a look inside!

The dresser on the left is my old IKEA dresser from my senior year of college, re-purposed, re-shined.

The lanterns and frames… a collection from Home Goods and TJ Maxx!

The cubby dresser on the right was also a re-purpose/re-shine from my old house (once served as my entertainment center), and the cubby bins (also from IKEA) created to fit perfectly in there. I know IKEA is meant to be cheap and “easy to assemble yourself” …well, don’t be fooled here. These bins LITERALLY caused blood to be shed by both Chance and I. Once they were all put together (originally unfinished plywood) we painted them white and I added the miniature chalk boards and my own titles.

The bathroom was finally settled with this shade of raspberry (a Disney color called Enchanted ….something about Cinderella… I can’t remember) and the adorable onesie made by my sweet friend Lauren Artino with her amazing “Evy Love Creations” The chalkboard is from Hobby Lobby… glitzed up by me and a glue gun with the white chiffon trim. Underneath the chalkboard hang the most important detail of the nursery… her 8 Pearls of Wisdom. Chance and I have prayerfully considered 8 biblical values that we will teach our daughter over the course of her life. The chalkboard will eventually serve as a learning tool to instill these characteristics in her little heart. The 8 pearls of wisdom (written on each pearl) are: Love, Kindness, Obedience, Thankfulness, Humility, Wisdom, Purity and Truth. I designed this custom art piece for Swayze in Photoshop, but then commissioned my sweet dad to actually hand paint it onto a 2 ft x 4 ft piece of masonite board. The room couldn’t have been complete without my dad’s hand in it. I LOVE this piece.

The glider is from Target, but custom recovered by Sheri Rasmussen, our favorite seamstress in the Valley!
The bedding is my mom’s craftsmanship and work of art. She SLAVED over this bedding. Of course, bouncing in and out of so many baby stores and online boutiques, nothing was “just perfect” for her. My mom laughed and said… “I had the same problem when you were born, so I made yours. I think it’s only fitting that we make your daughters’ as well.” It’s times like that that make you tear up, thinking of the generational tradition and love that is being created. Here is her bathroom art. (Created in Photoshop) and printed to a 20×20.

Diamond rings from Z Gallery. This poster (again created in Photoshop and printing at 20×30) is the saying that I had engraved inside Chance’s wedding ring. “I love you more today” –sorry for the reflection! This will always be a true statement in our house.

The Caruso’s: A Super Special Family

I love this family. We happen to be related, but I love them for more reasons than that. :)

You’d be hard-pressed to find two sweeter boys than Michael and Ryan. They are helpers, givers, hard-workers, and they are already learning to have “happy hearts” and choose joy at a young age. Their parents have taught them to value experiences more than things, others more than self, and God above all else. I’m so thankful for the example of my aunt and uncle. They are an amazing family who are bright lights in their community.

I’ll be photographing their extended family in a few weeks so here’s a preview until then.

Hello from Amy!! I’m so privileged to take the reigns on blogging while Kacey is doing the important work of having a baby (soon…not yet!!)

I had the joy this past weekend to photograph my sweet friend and college roomie, Jenn, and her beautiful (and growing) family! It was amazing to get an entire Saturday morning with these friends that I don’t get to see often enough. I love this family to pieces and I’m so excited for you to see their crazy, beautiful, and never-boring life!
