Randi flew in from Portland, OR on Monday morning for her FLASH COURSE! It was a PACKED workshop with 3 mini sessions, her session, computer fun and lots… and I mean lots of candy. In fact, we ran so ragged and fast that our lunch on Tuesday was Milk Duds and Gobstoppers. I promise, I offered to feed her at any moment possible, but we were still full from breakfast and just feeling a few handfuls of candy… my teeth are on their way out, for sure.
So, here are a few shots I snagged of Randi shooting my sweet friend, Amy, our model. Amy is always up for a shoot and Randi was thrilled to shoot such a great subject.

One of the MOST important aspects to shooting models is talking to them, demonstrate poses, get involved and put yourself in their shoes. Feeling confident direction your subjects will get you the shots you want and exactly what you are envisioning. Models, families, seniors… whoever it is that you’re shooting cannot read you mind, so it’s up to us to tell them what we’re dreaming up in our heads. We are more than just photographers. We are set designers, lighting/ambient lighting directors, posing coordinators, enthusiastic cheerleaders, clowns and camera technicians. All wrapped up in one person. A good photographer will exude all of those characteristics… especially the camera technician part.
I LOVE this shot. We chose this location so I could teach Randi about exposing correctly for shooting both into the sun and with minor obstructions to the sun. You can tell in the next few shots, we took shots at her from every angle without really rotating her body for the sake of training. We had such a blast….and several onlookers with cell phone camera drive by snaps
